October 2006 Field Target Match Results

By Brad Troyer

We had another great shoot this month with 9 shooters in attendance. We had to move the match up one week this month and the weather turned out to be great. The morning started out cold but the range warmed up quickly as did some of the shooting. We had Roz Supmter shooting with us this week. He was fresh off his win at the Nationals as National Piston Division Champion, congratulations Roz! He switched over to PCP this month, shooting his new Theoben MFR. He is still working out the bugs with the rifle but it looks like he is going to do well with it in the future. We shot the 30 shot Hunter course to start the day and then finished with a 60 shot traditional FT match. In the Hunter match we had a three way tie for first in Piston division with David Slade, Harold Rushton and his son Mathew Rushton all shooting a 26. This is Mathew and Harold's first full season shooting FT and they are both learning and improving quickly. My guess is that this father and son team will be a force to deal with in the future. Another up and comer is Rick Thompson. He scored a 27 in Hunter PCP for top honors and a 55 in traditional FT to take top score in both matches. Nice going Rick! Rod Bradley was on fire, again, with his Whizzer. He score a whopping 54, which disappointed this shooter since I shoot my yearly best of 52 and thought I had the dang match won. It just wasn't meant to be, maybe next month. Another score to note is Harold's 15 year old daughter Elisabeth. She was shooting a AA S300 for the first time and score an 18 in the Hunter course with it, very good shooting Elisabeth.

The wind was tricky and the course was a bit harder this month. With several shots in an open field and unpredictable winds it confounded many of us, mostly me! I had both shots on a 51 yarder in the open field where the wind died on my first shot and I dinked it, then the wind gusted and I didn't even hit metal! I missed two but I really enjoyed the challenge! This was my last target of the match so I tried one more time and dropped that target, I showed it who was the boss (even if it was too late). We all thank the Ross family for hosting our club matches. The property is beautiful and we all appreciate the opportunity to shoot on there land.

Next month is the Alabama State championship which will be on Saturday November 11th. The match will start at 10:00 am with practice range opening around 8:00 am. It will be a 90 shot match with 15 lanes and three targets per lane (see the match schedul for more info). It will test your endurance for sure and then we will chow down on some great food. If you are in the area, please come out and shoot with us. We hope to see you all then.
