TVA First FT Match of 2005

My local fledgling club, Tennessee Valley Airgunners, had their first Field Target match this past weekend (March 19, 2005). The match came off without a hitch, the only concern as we arrived at the range in the morning was rain. We got just a light sprinkle inbetween the Hunter match and the Traditional match and it wasn't enough to even get the ground wet. The wind was the big story of the day. Whooo, it was blowin! The rain was brought in by a weak front that also brought wind in front of it and gusty wind behind it. It really made shooting interesting, especially in the open field where we had some 40+ yard targets.

I shot horribly all day. I ended up with a 23 of 30 on the Hunter course and a 36 of 60 on the traditional course. I haven't been shooting enough over the winter and what shooting I did do was mostly standing shooting in my garage. I setup a 6m range so I could practice my standing shooting with my FWB300. My standing practice payed off as I cleaned all my standing shots on both courses, however I should have been practicing my sitting shot more as I was not in form on either course. It took me the better part of the traditional course to start getting into form and start hitting some tough shots. For me, I have to practice to keep my skills honed. On top of the lack of practice, I hadn't been training much the past few weeks because I had the head crud that is going around here locally. Plus I have been drinking coffee again and that makes me much more jitterly. Well, now I have my official excuse documented and I can move on!

With my poor showing at the range on Saturday, I setup a practice range across my backyard on Sunday so I can practice shooting level. I can shoot straight back into the woods behind my house but we live at the base of a mountain and the ground elevates about 6 feet at my 50 yard target holder so I am forever shooting up. I needed some practice shooting level and down and I can do that at reduced range across my yard. After sitting down and taking a few practice rounds I found that my windage was off to the right and hitting low. It was no wonder I did so poorly at the match the day before. I made a few more adjustments to my new trigger blade as well and got some good practice in. I will need it too since the Cajun Classic in Baton Rouge is coming up in just a few weeks. I am going to have to work hard to get my shot back if I want to do well there!
